Khasa

The Narts did not know the power of a single person; there is no mention of tsars, kings, or khans in the Nart epic.
All public decisions were made at meetings called «Khasa».
The decisions of the Khase were obeyed by everyone without exception; even the famous Nart heroes were summoned to the Khase and given assignments, the execution of which was mandatory.
In modern terms, the Narts were a truly democratic, civil society. At the meetings, the right to speak was given to everyone and everyone’s opinion was taken into account. The art of public speaking, the gift of eloquence, the ability to argue their position had an absolute influence on these meetings and on the decisions made.
